SGLI is low-cost group term life insurance for service members. You can carry coverage up to the program maximum (currently $500,000) for a small monthly premium taken straight out of your pay, with no medical exam to enroll at the standard level. Family coverage is available too: up to $100,000 for a spouse (premium based on age) and $10,000 per child at no cost. When you separate, you can convert to Veterans' Group Life Insurance.
